2016 Pantone Color(s) of the Year

(Belated) Happy New Year, everyone!  It’s been two weeks into the new year and we hope that you are having a fantastic 2016 so far!

With so many exciting new developments within our stores, 2016 is dubbed as the year of “change”.  Through innovation and continuous improvement, this year we are going to have a lot of new and exciting ventures to look forward to.

Speaking of “change” and “exciting” things, in regards to design, the new year calls for a fresh new hue by the world’s color authority, Pantone.   Last year we were introduced to the color Marsala.  This year, for the first time in history, Pantone announced not just one, but two colors of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity.  Yep, twins!

Rose Quartz and Serenity are shades of light pink and light blue.  A unisex palette, the colors were selected as a response to our societal movement towards gender equality.  Pantone explained that selecting two colors challenged traditional perceptions about color association.  The colors offer a touch of sophistication and relaxation.

“Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.” – Leatrice Eisemen Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute.

Pantone2016

In home decor they make great accent colors in dark or light colored rooms.  They can also bring a rustic farmhouse look when paired with gray.  If you’re feeling beachy, rose quartz and serenity can create a soft feeling of sunset on the beach.  I’ve seen them, and pink sunsets are one of the most beautiful works of nature.

The colors are unassuming and as a pair brings an essence of inner peace and tranquility –  vital factors in creating your home sweet home.

What do you think of Rose Quartz and Serenity?

8 Things We Are Thankful For

Oh my how has the year flown by!

It’s already Thanksgiving, one of our favorite holidays of the year!  Not just because of the food, festivities and the biggest shopping day Black Friday, but mainly because it is a time to reflect and be thankful.  It is a day we spend with friends and family and eat (and drink) way more than we can handle.

Thanksgiving is a day when we stop and take a moment to realize how truly blessed we are.

At Red Knot, we continue to be thankful.  For every thing Red Knot.  From our families within the different departments, our sisters stores and parent company C. S. Wo & Sons, Ltd., to our vendors and manufacturers, and of course to our loyal customers.  Thank you.

Thank you for allowing us to continue to not only make a difference, but also to enhance your lives through our passion of providing the very best home furnishing service.

Of course we can’t do this without some of our magnificent lineup.  To continue our yearly “tradition” of sharing our current Red Knot favorites for this year, here are some things we are thankful for.

Thankful

HESTER COFFEE TABLE SET
“Our new Hester Coffee Table Set has become one of my absolute favorites since the day it arrived on the floor! This piece starts off as a coffee table with four storage ottomans and transforms into a dining table with just the press of a button. With its maximum functionality and comfortable style, this piece is perfect for those that need the ultimate space saver.” – Stephanie, Red Knot Honolulu

JACKSON SOFA
“I love it because of its very sleek and simply luxury modern style! Be sure to balance the lighting of your setup to have a better contrast. Since the Jackson sofa is black I would add white and grey with a little hint of teal.” – Rogi, Red Knot Aiea

AUGUSTUS SECTIONAL
“This sectional is very versatile, trendy and you can pick the color that you want. Three pieces would be perfect but you can add more if you want to make statement. It’s totally up to you the only limit is your imagination.”– Jake, Red Knot Aiea

TOMPKINS CHAISE STORAGE BED
“The not-so-shabby but chic chaise lounge, sofabed and storage all in one! I’m so thankful that we have the Tompkins here at Red Knot- I love that it has the neutral look and curves of a chaise, but the functionality of a bed and storage space. It also comes with all of these pillows! Great for small spaces that can’t accomodate a full size sofa. Proving again, that big things come in small packages :)” – Honey, Red Knot Team Leader

RANDALL SOFA CHAISE
“The Randall sofa chaise is my favorite piece at Red Knot. This is because of the quality of its construction (solid wood frame, 2.5 density foam cushion with Pirelli webbing), price (a steal at $1599), and contemporary style.” – Tobias, Red Knot Honolulu

CARMAN SOFA
“I’m thankful for the Carman sofa because for one, I love the color yellow and because it stands out from the rest of our sofas here in RK. Most importantly it makes me feel happy whenever I look at it and sit on it!” – Micah Ellah, Red Knot Honolulu

MAGUIRE COLLECTION
“My current favorite item is the McGuire living room set . It takes you back to a retro time period but still has a modern look . The clean lines makes this pieces versatile when designing a home or staging. I have had a lot of great comments from clients.” – Shawn, Red Knot Aiea

“I definitely don’t mind this piece photo bombing my selfie! The Maguire accent chair has great styling for a large high-backed chair and fits into many color schemes with its grey fabric. I especially like the extra space to get comfortable with a book, or get cozy when sharing the seat with someone, or maybe even both. Definitely a favorite of mine from the many new pieces here at Red Knot!” – Alex, Red Knot Aiea

YORK SWIVEL CHAIR
“I love the modern style and comfort of the York. It reminds me of a mini Papa San chair. Being that I grew up with a Papa San chair in my house, it brings that home feeling with a hint of modern style. C’mon who doesn’t love a swivel chair?!” – Anson, Red Knot Honolulu

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Style It Your Way – The Thurman Sofa

One of our newest arrivals at Red Knot is the Thurman Collection from Violino.

ThurmanSofa_RedKnot

The Thurman takes the term “designer” to a whole new level.  An upscale new frame from Violino’s European collection – contemporary, yet elegant.   Modern, yet transitional.  This Italian frame features a firm seating of 2.5 density foam, sinuous springs and piping to frame it’s curved silhouette. Definitely a one-of-a-kind statement piece to add to your space, the Thurman gives the advantage of being stylish and versatile.

Our Red Knot Team Members dressed up the Thurman sofa, reflecting their creative personalities and design tips.

STARBURST COLLIDE
Jake-StarburstCollide

“Starburst has been one of my favorite candies since I was younger, especially the orange flavor. This very modern collection is proof that orange is the new black. I’ve styled up all my favorite items at Red Knot in one look.  The Thurman sofa is paired with the York swivel chair and Supernova coffee table topped with three phalaenopsis plants.  I also used three different accent pillows and the most popular rug in our store, the Cosmopolitan rug.  The hurricane lamps in turquoise, lilac and amber are the icing on the cake. And for final touches I used wall art (LA and NY) to really complement the color scheme of this vignette.” – Jake Javier, Red Knot Pearlridge

HAPPY-MESS LIFE BALANCEMicah-HappymessLifeBalance

“Everyone wants to find their work-life balance, and whether you’re studying, adjusting work schedules or typing up documents, the living room is one of the most comfortable places to work from; it’s the definition of balance – everything happens in the living room. By enhancing your living space with stimulating colors like orange or magenta, it can help to keep you focused and elevate your mood.  This contemporary room design allows you to feel comfortable and psychologically keep you sane through all the work you need to finish by midnight! I chose glass tables to reflect a clean studious atmosphere and they also highlight the sofa. Then, by adding a cow-hide ottoman, the room suddenly becomes playful – who would’ve thought to match this sofa with an animal print? To keep a casual feel, drape your throw blanket over an ottoman. Lastly, the accessories pull the room together. The textured rug creates an elegant balance and pillows in a saturated magenta or a hue of orange provide a stimulating effect. The use of greenery, like the potted succulents will provide harmony and comfort.” – Micah Eugenio, Red Knot Honolulu

COZY COTTAGE HOUSEShawn-CozyCottageHouse

“I wanted to bring in different wood elements into the space with a modern sofa piece. I love the outdoors, so earthy tones played a key role in this design.” – Shawn Estevez, Red Knot Aiea

THE PEARLAnson-

“The Thurman sofa reminds me of a clam! In this case it reflects how a neutral sofa when dressed up with accessories, can flourish to create a beautiful pearl! Also, I kept this look neutral by using plants and natural colors.” Anson Barros, Red Knot Honolulu

LET’S FACE ITRogi-LetsFaceIt

“Some people are scared of mixing modern and traditional pieces, especially when it comes to colors. It’s like eating plain cereal, instead of eating cereal with raisins and diced apples.  The beauty of modern and rustic elements will reveal itself once you add colors and textures.” Rogi Ramil, Red Knot Aiea

MODERN MEETS NATURESteph-ModernMeetsNature

“This sofa screams “sophisticated and unique” so I wanted something modern and light, yet still inviting. I used a lot of metallic and glass to bring in a glam factor, but anchored it with lots of green hues and plants. It has a modern and sophisticated edge while maintaining a warm and inviting vibe.” Stephanie Vierra, Red Knot Honolulu

WONKA’S LIVING ROOMAlex-WonkasWorld

“Your design can be inspired by anything. I took direction from an art piece ,”Wonka’s World”, to create “Wonka’s Living Room”. My design tip – find a color palette, art piece or even an outfit that speaks to you and run with it.” Alex Takeda, Red Knot Aiea

NOVEL ROOSTNovelRoost“I was striving to create a look that was modern yet still relaxed and inviting. I began with the Cosmopolitan rug for its geometric designs.  The patterns helped to add structure to the curvature of the sofa.  Next, I chose the Vintage coffee and end table. The rustic wood tones complemented the color of the sofa and the metal base anchored the style to the living room. Additionally, I added in the York swivel chair. It added an entertaining and fun element. Finally I finished this look with complementing blue pillows and lively accessories.” Tobias Vidaurri, Red Knot Honolulu

GILDED ELEGANCEHoney-GirlsBestFriend

“This vignette was inspired from a glamorous palette – since the Thurman sofa is in a light gray, it was very easy to complement it with an ‘all that glitters’ theme.  A fashionista’s lair, this living room features a glass oval coffee table, a chic rocking chair with chrome legs, and silver end tables with gold table top decors.  The hand tufted wool rug adds texture and mimics the curvaceous legs of the coffee table, while the splattered wall art completes the modern glam look.  There are also complementary patterns on the accent pillow.  Pops of yellow help to break the monotony of the palette, and gives it a more lived-in feel.  Fashion magazines, coasters and decanters are ready for when the BFFs come by for a girls night in.  Just like diamonds, the Thurman sofa is most definitely a girl’s best friend.”  Honey Millon, Red Knot

Now you can see how versatile our Thurman collection is.  Which look is your favorite?

Through Rose (Gold)-Colored Glasses

Silver can be so cold, gold can be too lavish, but rose gold….it has a certain charm to it. I’ve noticed in recent years that rose gold and copper metal has all but taken over a lot of the home decor world, particularly when it comes to millennials. Watch any home decor haul on Youtube and I promise you’ll see at least one piece of rose gold or copper in almost every single video. But what makes these two warm metals so special? Well, let’s talk about the difference between the two.

Both are a variation of the well beloved gold shade. While copper has a very orange based undertone, rose gold is a mixture between copper and gold with a more pink undertone. Copper is seen more often in home decor but a touch of rosy metallic shine is not unheard of either.

What I love about this rose gold and copper trend is it’s warmth. Gold can often times be too loud or bright, where as rose gold and copper brings a warmer yet luxurious feel. From light fixtures to accessories, take a look at some of the great ways you can welcome this new metal into your home!

Get The Look for Less – The Chesterfield Sofa

The Chesterfield sofa is more than just a classic piece of furniture.  It is historic as it is luxurious.  Named after the Earl of Chesterfield in the 1700s, this sofa has been around for hundreds of years.  Created and handcrafted in endless forms and fabrications throughout a span of four centuries, the Chesterfield retained its signature elements – button tufting, rolled arms, rivet trims, and low bun legs.

As styles vary, so do prices.  At Red Knot, we stand by our standards – to provide you savvy dwellers value and quality at affordable prices.  Our Chesterfield sofa is a steal compared to industry designer pricing.  How awesome is that!

Let Your Style Shine Through: Custom order program

Furniture shopping tends to happen as often as once every few years, so it’s important to enjoy the whole process.  Buying furniture should not be hard, nor should it be stressful. It should be fun. Yes, technical factors such as design, size, quality and price should be taken into consideration, but also remember the most important factor of all is personality.

Find and buy furniture that reflects you.

Your home interior, just like your fashion choices, is a reflection of your personality.

At Red Knot, we take the term “personality” and give it meaning through our Custom Order Program.  We have never been your average cookie cutter furniture store and we are so proud to share that custom options are available for many of our upholstered pieces including sofa, loveseat and chairs.

Our frames from VIOLINO can be customized through different color selections and custom order options.

Hamlin, our only (and best selling) power reclining sofa and loveseat, can now be ordered in various colors.  So, for those who abide by the “no-white” rule for all kinds of reasons, fear no more, as we have black, brown, gray, and even burgundy available for our “lazy boys” (and gals) who wants to relax in their perfect reclining sofa after a long day.

The very modern and sleek Jackson sofa a.k.a the bachelor favorite, can now be ordered in a sectional.  You read it right, ladies.  Not just a sofa, but a sofa-chaise sectional.  That means more seating and leg room, which is a wonderful compromise between you and your-boyfriend-who-loves-it-because-it’s-perfect-for-his-mancave.  It’s a win-win situation!  Imagine, movie nights at his place with more room for cuddling!  Also, another thing to note – through our custom program, he can consider another color other than black that is not so…masculine. 🙂

Speaking of colors, Violino offers fabrications in different colors as well as textures.  Ariapelle and Dinera are both high-performance fabrics, the first having a more sheen, and the latter, a more matte finish. What they both have in common is they feel and look leather-like, but they are made of 100% high-quality and breathable polyester.  When it comes to color and texture, whichever fits your personality best, you decide.

Not only do our Violino frames make fantastic options just by themselves, we had to kick it up a notch by providing another custom order program. In addition to custom colors and sectional preferences, the Whitney sofa is now available in a sleeper.  It’s an actual pull-out bed.  And to be even more precise, a Queen size memory-foam sleeper.  Great to have for those expected (and unexpected) guests.  Although we have to warn you, the memory foam mattress just might make them want to stay a little bit lo-onger than you planned.  You’re welcome.

Our BOLIYA frames, Barkly, Gilford, and Bannon offer (almost) endless possibilities of colors and fabrics.  With over 90 different fabrics to choose from, Boliya provides virtually the most custom options at Red Knot.  Fabrications include micro-fiber, twill and velvet to name a few.  Ranges of hues vary from grays to browns, denim, blues and reds.  You decide what color your sofa will be AND you can also choose the colors of the accompanying pillows on your frame.  So many options!

Think about who you are, what you love and what inspires you.  Incorporating these elements makes your home more comfortable for you and your guests.

All That Glitters Is…

…gold… and silver. They shine, they sparkle, and yes, they’re luxurious!  In home design metallics are no longer just festive accents during the holidays. Modern and chic, whether in the spring or summer, gold and silver brings a dash of style and regality like no other colors.

How do you incorporate this glitzy trend in your home?  Read below for some tips.

METALLIC 101

They might be flashy, but they can also be considered neutrals because they work with any color palette. Although, keep in mind metallic tones are reflective in nature. So it’s important to allow them to be the star of their own show, and make them pop. Gold and silver can make any space gleam worthy, you have to literally, make them shine.  As accessories, the most dramatic impact is done in small doses. Otherwise, it will be overwhelming.  If you decide to go bigger, as in metallic furniture, then by all means go BIG! Then keep everything else neutral. Lastly, you can mix and match gold and silver. It adds texture and creates a history- a not so monotonous “I actually live here” look.  Like everything else, it’s all about balance.

GO FOR THE GOLD

Black and gold = sexy and lustrous. For fashionistas, think the LBD with a gold statement necklace. Rich gold also works well on rustic brick walls as it create a contrast of whimsy. Achieve this look by placing a gold starburst mirror against urban brick walls. For a sunny and more inviting atmosphere, play up yellow with gold.  For a feminine touch, go for light gold and glass, such as our Rachel Occasional Table Collection here at Red Knot.

SEE THE SILVER LINING

AquaSilver_decoist

Silver works great with floral patterns as it softens the palette. Decorate with white tabletop accessories to enhance the silver. Cool shades of blue or white with silver and chrome accents creates a sleek and polished look, however you can warm up the atmosphere by adding warm tones of gold.

Choosing That Perfect Rug

SuryaAreaRug Image Courtesy of http://www.decoratorsbest.com

Area rugs are the essential decorative accessory in a room. It is a functional piece (protects the floor and your feet) while enhancing design elements to the space. The styles, colors and materials to choose from are endless! Sometimes it can feel like it’s tricky business when it comes to selecting that ideal rug, but it’s a lot simpler than you think.

There are several main elements to keep in mind during this process. Finding the right rug can create a space to perfection but the wrong one can make it feel unfinished, awkward and even uncomfortable.

Color, size, texture and materials are some things to carefully consider.  Read on for tips on mastering the challenge of choosing the perfect rug.

COLOR

Color and style choice is important as it sets a mood and creates a story or relationship between your room and the rug. About one-third of a room’s color is dominated by the color of the floor covering, so a rug will seem as one of the largest pieces of “furniture” in the room. Plan your color scene depending on the colors of the rug.

Darker colors help define a more intimate space while lighter colors create a more spacious feel. Fiery hues such as yellow, orange or red add warmth while cool colors (blues, greens) creates a calming mood. For a cohesive look, choose a rug that compliments two or three main colors in the room. If there are a lot of color and pattern going on in your space, then choosing a neutral color rug is okay, but don’t play it too safe. Choose patterns and bright colors if your primary furniture is a solid color. Geometric prints are best for modern settings while floral prints work better for a more traditional look.

SIZE

Since rugs come in a myriad of shapes and sizes, remember that choosing your rug is also dependent on room size.  A rug should fit the size of your seating area. All furniture should be placed on the rug. In a living room the rug should be large enough so at the very least the front legs of the furniture are on it. In the dining room, area rugs should cover beyond the chairs. To get the correct measurement, measure the table and add roughly about two feet. You can also sit on one of the chairs and measure the distance from the table, and add it all around. In the bedroom, you want to feel the luxurious rug on your feet so that you wake up every morning on the soft side, not the wrong side, of the bed!

A 5×8 area rug is a good choice for a medium sized room, such as the bedroom or under the coffee table in the living room. 8×10 rugs work best in dining rooms and master bedrooms. Square or round rugs are great choices for square rooms, and rectangular rugs oriented in the same direction in rectangular rooms.

TEXTURE

Texture adds layers to a room so don’t overlook this aspect when choosing your rug. The way the rug feels also (literally) adds to the feel to the room. Shoot for contrast- use the texture of your existing pieces to guide you. Sleek leather sofas go great with shag rugs or rugs with fluffier pile. A soft, velvety sofa go best with hard rugs like jute and sisal. Wool rugs are elegant in texture and add warmth and definition to a room that has shiny or smooth surfaces.

MATERIAL

When selecting rugs, think practical and choose materials depending on the traffic area of the room. The material that dominates the world of rugs is wool due to its low maintenance and high durability; however some people may be allergic to the fibers. Shag rugs can become a tripping hazard for elderly people because of the raised pile. Also keep in mind the maintenance of the rug. Jute, grass and sisal rugs have interesting textures and often cost less, but they stain easily, difficult to clean and don’t last as long. If you spill coffee or red wine, it’s time to say bye bye.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Surya-Rugs-Pillows Image Courtesy of http://www.arearugsclub.com

*Consider adding a rug pad, especially to flat weave rugs to add a layer of comfort.
*Place dark-colored or patterned rugs under your dining table as they are better at hiding stains.
*There is a huge misconception to buy the rug last. Big no-no. When it comes to decorative accents, choose the rug first because it is THE piece that creates a dramatic impact and ties the room together.

After finding your perfect rug, you can move on to your throw pillows, then curtains and other decorative pieces like wall art and table tops.

Wait… did someone say pillows? Stay tuned for next week’s blog post on layering pillows.  Meanwhile, shop for your perfect rug  here.

Designing Small Spaces

Decorating a small space can be tricky. It’s important to understand the key factors and the common misconceptions when it comes to decorating small spaces. Get inspired and learn how to make the most of your small-space situation with these top tips and design ideas.

IMG_0706

Tip #1
KNOW YOUR STUFF!
There are a few things you need to know before you get started. First is the measurement of the space- by knowing your dimensions, you will know your space limitations. Also, determine the purpose or function of the room. Who will be using the room, for what, when, and how? Is it a playroom for the kids, will it be a home office, a family or guest room? It’s also important to understand the traffic flow of the space as it relates to adjoining rooms, doorways, windows, etc. One way that you can take all of these elements into consideration – size, purpose of the room and traffic flow- is by designing a room plan. Eventually, you will need a visual of the space you are designing, and it makes it easier to work with once you have a sketch of the space. Know that at Red Knot, we offer a service that allows you to create a room plan with one of our team members to make your furniture shopping much more fun and enjoyable!

Tip #2
DON’T BE FOOLED BY MISCONCEPTIONS
There are some myths of do’s and don’ts when designing small spaces.
a. MYTH- DO select only light colors such as whites, creams or light beiges because it gives a sense of spaciousness into the room. TRUTH- It’s okay to use color to give the space life and personality. Yes, lighter tones enhance airiness, but using pops of color add personality to the décor.
b. MYTH- DON’T use bold prints and textures. TRUTH- Like colors, adding a graphic print will add depth and personality. Without texture, the space gets very boring. Using bold pillows and rugs can pull a room together and make it complete.
c. MYTH- DO keep an open concept approach. TRUTH- It’s best to identify areas within the space to have purpose. If not, the space will look messy and undefined.
d. MYTH- DO place furniture against the wall. TRUTH- Putting furniture against the wall constricts the space, making it seem smaller. If possible, pull furniture away from the wall as it creates depth and sense of larger space.

Tip #3
THINK OF DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAXIMIZE SPACE
In a small space, make room for function. Choose pieces with multifunction capabilities. Consider versatile pieces such as futon sleepers, storage bed frames, convertible dining tables and nesting tables to name a few. Choose flexible furniture that allows you to change the layout of the furniture. Being able to move things around makes you feel less beholden and cramped.” Organization through vertical storage and bookcases not only hide clutter and but also makes the ceiling appear higher! Small furniture emphasize that the room is small, so go bigger with your furniture selection. Furniture with big statements make small rooms feel more spacious. Larger furniture will trick the eye into thinking that the space is larger.
While doing so, keep in mind to keep the silhouette of the furniture slim. Select upholstery with thin arms, dining table with slim legs and case goods with simple, clean lines.

Remember that tiny spaces don’t have to sacrifice comfort or style. You don’t have to decorate a small space based solely on function. Be creative- let the room, no matter the size, reflect your personality and your style!
