Mid-Century Modern Living

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the words mid-century modern?

Retro? The fifties? James Bond films? Or even the television show Mad Men?

Mid-century modern is a broad term used to describe architecture, graphic design, and furniture from the middle of the 20th century (roughly from the 40’s-70’s). While Mad Men is an obvious example of the style, you’ve probably seen it around a lot more than you even realized. It’s frequently used in advertisements, television, film, and talk shows.

A style with roots from the post-World War I era where trends shifted into a fresh, new aesthetic to help boost America into a more modern era. Furniture was designed to be simple and clean, allowing it to be built quickly and distributed to consumers. Overall style and frames featured clean lines with sometimes multi-functional benefits and bold geometric designs, strong patterns, and graphics; a nice blend between comfort and chic style.

Here at Red Knot we carry a lot of transitional pieces, many of which have mid-century modern features like – tufted detailing, tapered wooden legs, and clean lines. Although the retro style won’t be for everyone, it does conjure up images of casual living for the minimalist at heart that is truly timeless.

Here are some important features of a mid-century modern room:

-Lots of wood

Look at any mid-century modern living room and one thing you’ll notice in all of them is the wood pieces. Whether it be the coffee table, sideboard, or TV stand the use of clean, beautifully crafted wood was predominantly used (a lot of teak, oak, walnut, etc).

-Tapered Legs

A lot of mid-century modern pieces have wooden legs that taper slightly out which gives any piece of furniture a more vintage look.

-Graphic/bold patterns

Bold, graphic patterns were very popular back in the good ol’ days, mostly with a more geometric design element. If having your sofa or accent chair in a patterned fabric is a bit much, then using art work is an easy way to add this fun element to your mid-century modern room.

-White paint

People of this era and style were very proud of the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into their furniture. The best way to showcase that and keep the attention on their furniture was to keep walls light and simple with a coat of fresh white paint.

-Special touch: bar area

Having a tiny bar area goes perfectly with the era of this design trend…so why not? While not all of us can have a built in bar for our home, adding a small bar cart to set the mood can add the perfect finishing touch to your living or dining room.

The Wing-back Chair

The same could be said for furniture and if there is one thing I think we can all agree on, it’s that the wing-back chair is a truly timeless piece of furniture. This stylish and elegant chair has been around since the 1600’s and has been transformed through the years to adapt to our constant evolution and growth, while still maintaining its signature style.

A wing-back chair is essentially a club chair with “wings” that enclose the chair from the back down to the armrest. This was designed to protect the head/torso area from drafts and trap heat inside. Although initially constructed solely of wood, it wasn’t until around the 18th century that upholstery was incorporated.

What makes this chair so timeless is not only its impeccable style but also the versatility it offers, especially with different adaptations introduced through the years. In a bedroom setting, it’s the perfect accent chair to add a little sophistication. Dress up your living room or entryway with a couple of these to create a cozy seating area. You can even use it as a luxurious office chair for your desk or library. One of our newest arrivals at Red Knot is the Thurman Collection from Violino.

The Thurman takes the term “designer” to a whole new level. An upscale new frame from Violino’s European collection – contemporary, yet elegant. Modern, yet transitional. This Italian frame features a firm seating of 2.5 density foam, sinuous springs and piping to frame it’s curved silhouette. Definitely a one-of-a-kind statement piece to add to your space, the Thurman gives the advantage of being stylish and versatile.

I also used three different accent pillows and the most popular rug in our store, the Cosmopolitan rug. The hurricane lamps in turquoise, lilac and amber are the icing on the cake. NOVEL ROOST“I was striving to create a look that was modern yet still relaxed and inviting. I began with the Cosmopolitan rug for its geometric designs. The patterns helped to add structure to the curvature of the sofa. Next, I chose the Vintage coffee and end table. The rustic wood tones complemented the color of the sofa and the metal base anchored the style to the living room. Additionally, I added in the York swivel chair. The hand tufted wool rug adds texture and mimics the curvaceous legs of the coffee table, while the splattered wall art completes the modern glam look. Inspired by Madison Modern Home‘s staging project featured on Houzz, we recreated this living room with our Chesterfield sofa as the focal point and used other Red Knot pieces. The Chesterfield sofa gives off a modern twist with a little bit of texture play when paired with a cowhide rug, glass coffee table and fun pillows and tabletop accessories. We had so much fun recreating this look!

Doze off in style

We spend about a third of our life sleeping – that’s an average of 8 hours a day or 229,961 hours in a lifetime! Unless you work from home, your bed is a piece of furniture that gets used the most. At Red Knot, we offer a few different options when it come to styling up your bedroom.

Let’s start with the Nevis. It’s one of our most popular bedroom collections made in Indonesia with solid tropical mahogany and eastern ashwood veneer. All of the drawers feature full extension, ball-bearing glides for easy access to all of your belongings. The floating platform bed frame works great in the middle of a room or under a window. One of the amazing features of the Nevis bed – the convenient storage on either side of the bed. It’s an added benefit for those with smaller spaces.

* Red Knot tip: For those who love this bed frame but want a headboard: try a headboard wall decal! They’re cost efficient, easy to apply/remove, and come in many different styles.

Next up is the Element collection. Also made in Indonesia, this collection is made of solid tropical mahogany and mahogany veneer. It also features ball-bearing glides and similar clean lines. What sets the Element apart is it’s clean design without any hardware or handles on it’s drawers. This hardware-less design provides a clean palette for your modern bedroom decor and it helps to keep you from getting caught on anything!

* Red Knot tip: This particular set is great for the minimalist at heart, but to spice things up a bit you could decorate the headboard by draping some sheer cloth on either side or hang lights along the top for a little bit of sparkle!.

If the Nevis and the Element had a baby, it would probably look like our Icon collection. The Icon is an imported collection crafted with melamine over MDF in a rich coffee finish. With aluminum and chrome accents both on the bed frame and the drawer hardware, it’s low profile creates the illusion of a larger space.

* Red Knot tip: For those with small spaces, give the illusion of a bigger room by hanging your curtains higher than just your window height. By bringing your curtains closer to the ceiling, it adds the illusion of height within a small space.

If you like the Icon, but just want a fresh light color? Look no further! Coming soon to our stores is something we all have been waiting for: a white bedroom set! Please give a big warm welcome to our new Bellmar bedroom collection. Sister to the Icon, the Bellmar boasts the same stylish features but without the glass paneled drawer accents.

*Red Knot tip: White bedroom furniture can give a modern, clean look to any room. However, be mindful of using too much white as it can make your cozy room feel a little cold and one dimensional. An easy way to break up all of that white is to layer on colorful accessories.

Wanting a mid-century modern vibe? The Palisades collection is a modern take on this popular trend. Similar to the Element, it has a clean facade without any hardware for drawer pulls. The legs taper out to give each piece a mid-century modern look. However, it’s best feature is the white upholstered headboard which gives it a soft, luxurious feel.

* Red Knot tip: Put away all of those pillows and let your headboard shine through! Historically, headboards were used to isolate us from the cold, they’re now used as a focal point of a bedroom while adding a decorative element.

Last, but certainly not least (and definitely my favorite!) is our Cornith bedroom collection. It’s constructed from Javanese hardwood with English dovetail joints. The Cornith is the only all solid wood bedroom collection at Red Knot and it’s affordable price tag makes it an absolute steal. With it’s gorgeous design and solid wood craftsmanship, what’s not to love? My fellow Red Knot team members would describe the Cornith as rustic, yet still refined and I would have to agree.

* Red Knot tip: One feature to note about the Cornith dresser is that it has 9 equal sized drawers. This is actually a more modern concept that is hard to find in a lot of traditional pieces. Have fun styling this collection by playing up accents with metal or chrome. The contrast between the natural wood and metal or chrome creates an interesting juxtaposition that will keep the room from feeling too rustic.

All That Glitters Is…

…gold… and silver. They shine, they sparkle, and yes, they’re luxurious! In home design metallics are no longer just festive accents during the holidays. Modern and chic, whether in the spring or summer, gold and silver brings a dash of style and regality like no other colors.

How do you incorporate this glitzy trend in your home? Read below for some tips.

METALLIC 101

They might be flashy, but they can also be considered neutrals because they work with any color palette. Although, keep in mind metallic tones are reflective in nature. So it’s important to allow them to be the star of their own show, and make them pop. Gold and silver can make any space gleam worthy, you have to literally, make them shine. As accessories, the most dramatic impact is done in small doses. Otherwise, it will be overwhelming. If you decide to go bigger, as in metallic furniture, then by all means go BIG! Then keep everything else neutral. Lastly, you can mix and match gold and silver. It adds texture and creates a history- a not so monotonous “I actually live here” look. Like everything else, it’s all about balance.

Black and gold = sexy and lustrous. For fashionistas, think the LBD with a gold statement necklace. Rich gold also works well on rustic brick walls as it create a contrast of whimsy. Achieve this look by placing a gold starburst mirror against urban brick walls. For a sunny and more inviting atmosphere, play up yellow with gold. For a feminine touch, go for light gold and glass, such as our Rachel Occasional Table Collection here at Red Knot.
